ARTICLE
Begun in 1962, Greenville Technical College is part of the thriving secondary education system in Greenville, SC and the Upstate region. Greenville Tech College is part of a four campus system that serves over 15,000 students pursuing degrees in more than 160 different disciplines. From nursing to engineering, business to public service – students have the opportunity to learn and to contribute back to the community as a whole.
Besides the students pursuing two year degrees or four year transfer programs – the college also offers a number of non-credit community education courses and programs that serve the Greenville community. Almost 37,000 students and residents take part in these classes and programs on an annual basis. In addition to these community education courses – Greenville Technical College also works closely with hundreds of local companies to offer continuing education courses – as well as to keep their educational programs and requirements current to meet the needs of their students and the community in which they will work.
Greenville Tech College is the largest public two-year college in South Carolina. Because the college is an open admission institution, it serves a diverse community – preparing students with a two year degree or prepping them for transfer to a four year degree program at another institution like nearby Clemson University.
The main campus of Greenville Technical College is the Barton campus – located in Greenville, SC. The Barton campus is located on more than a hundred tree-filled acres and is surrounded by local manufacturing companies and business centers where many students seek employment upon graduation from the college. Many students go on to work for BMW or Michelin – as well as a number of other companies that the college works closely with for placement.
And unlike many 2 year institutions – Greenville Technical College has on campus housing available to full-time students. Like any other college dorm – the student housing consists of apartments in which students can live and participate in student life. They also have a fitness center, pool table, and a number of study rooms. And while living on campus – the students can participate in a number of different extra-curricular activities and clubs. From student government to theatre and poetry – the range of student associations rival that of larger four year institutions. And because the main campus is located very close to downtown Greenville, SC – students can find a number of activities like shopping, dining, and entertainment very close to their living quarters.
In close proximity to the main campus of Greenville Tech College is Falls Park on the Reedy, the West End, and Haywood Mall among other things. The Peace Center for the Performing Arts is also very close and hosts numerous shows – musical and theatre – throughout the year.
Unlike most other typical commuter schools – Greenville Technical College – provides students with opportunities both educational and social. While pursuing a two year degree – students have the opportunity to experience and prepare for a longer degree program while learning how education at the college level takes place. Greenville Tech College is a fantastic stepping stone for students in the Greenville, SC area.
