The Greenville Senior High School is one of 14 high schools in the award winning Greenville County School District. Greenville High in Greenville, SC has over 1200 students attending grades 9 through 12. Greenville Senior High School recently underwent a renovation and expansion program as part of Greenville County School District one billion dollar county wide new construction and upgrade program.
Greenville High prides itself on its academic excellence. With 74 teachers (60% having at least a Masters Degree), this school places an emphasis on its academics as well as providing students with a diverse selection of extra-curricular activities and sports. In 2006, over 91% of its graduating students were attending some sort of post-secondary education. Some of these students were at local universities like Clemson University, Bob Jones University, and Furman University – while many were attending out of state institutions.
Besides academic excellence – many of Greenville High’s sports teams have achieved state wide recognition in high school competition. The Red Raiders varsity Lacrosse team won the AAA state championship in 2007 and 2008. The varsity basketball team also won a state championship in 2007. Many of the other sports teams have made it to regional finals and state finals throughout the years. Some of the sports that students have the opportunities to compete in include baseball, basketball, tennis, football, lacrosse, soccer, track, swimming, and wrestling. All student athletes must maintain strict academic standards in order to be eligible for competition.
Greenville Senior High School also offers students rigorous academic programs and courses of study in order to compete with students on a national level. Students at Greenville High can opt to apply for the school’s Advanced Academic Program which reflects a course of study that prepares the students for attendance at the nation’s top colleges and universities.
Besides the Advanced Academic Program – Greenville High offers students a number of Advanced Placement (AP) courses in which they can earn college credits. A high number of students take advantage of these courses and a high percentage of those students score highly on the AP tests. This helps students in seeking admission to competitive universities upon graduation.
Established in 1888 – Greenville High has a long history of academic excellence and achievement. South Carolina Governor Richard W. Riley graduated from Greenville Senior High School in 1950. He was elected governor in 1978 and served two terms. He is among a number of distinguished graduates of this school.
With over 6.1 million dollars in scholarships awarded to 2005 graduates – Greenville High is a fantastic stepping stone for students in the Greenville, SC area. Offering a wide range of academic programs, sports competition, and extra-curricular activities like National Honor Society, Student Council, and the ROTC – this school has served Greenville students well for over a century.
